Welcome to Principles of Engineering! This is a project-based class which depends on your own initiative, engagement, and participation. There is no required text, but you will be given relevant readings as necessary. I am excited to start some new projects this year and look forward to next week!

An abstract is similar to the executive summary of your paper. It is a clear, concise, objective description of your work. The purpose is to get the reader to want to read your entire paper, which contains much more detailed descriptions of your work, research, results, and conclusions.
Remember that this is a technical, scientific paper. It is very rare that it is okay to use the words, "I", "we", "woulda", "nowadays", etc. Be specific and objective. You will use MIT's App Inventor to create an original app for Android phones. Your app must have at least two layers and five unique functions. It may be a game, calendar feature, group notification feature, etc. It must be school appropriate.

We leave campus at 9:30 AM and will return around 1 PM. Please check with your teachers and reschedule any tests or quizzes given during that time.
The fall final will be on Thursday, and 8 AM in Clayton Gym. Please bring several pencils.
If you are taking the engineering final as a conflict exam, make sure to schedule it with me before next Monday. Before bridge construction can begin, a clear documented description of the design is required. A design proposal is a concise information tool that summarizes the most important information about a design project, serves as an agreement between the engineer and the client, and is used as a standard for assessing a solution’s validity at any point in the development process. Essentially, the design proposal is a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and your target audience. It is used to encourage thinking about all aspects of a problem before attempting a solution.
It should include a clear description of the constraints and a computer-aided design (CAD) drawing or hand drawing. The drawings need to show the bridge from the side and the top. Please label the roadway, the location of the testing apparatus, and all dimensions. The design proposal should be 1-2 pages typed, double-spaced, 12 pt font. The design drawings need to be a 1:1 scale. The test will cover trusses and all associated terms. You will need to be able to identify each type of truss and know the advantages, disadvantages, or purpose of each. You will also need to describe the terms used in discussing trusses and building structures.
Your presentation needs to be submitted to me before class starts, or will be considered late. You will also turn in your notebook, either a hard bound notebook, a loose leaf record, or a digital record at the beginning of class.
The first presentations start on Tuesday. You need to describe an engineering feat in history that influenced society and made people's lives easier.
Make sure to share your presentation with me before the start of class on Tuesday. You will present in a random order and you will be evaluated by your peers, as well as me. There is no required text, but you will be given relevant readings as necessary. I am excited to start some new projects this year and look forward to next week!
